East Meets West Emergency Kit
When we first started planning this trip we wanted to avoid getting sick (if possible) and hopefully treat something mild problems more naturally; so we went to our homeopath to get a list of all-natural options instead. For the record, we are not against western style medicine, we just think there is a lot we can do to avoid getting sick before resorting to more aggressive, albeit effecting, treatments. As you'll see from the list below, we don't carry just homeopathic options, and we explain why for each one. We hope we find our list helpful if you are looking for alternatives. Also, please consult with your homeopath to make sure none of these alternatives conflict with other stuff you are taking.
MediNatura BHI Diarrhea medicine - we haven't used this yet (thankfully!) but it's supposed to stop diarrhea without completely clogging your system. We'll update this post if/when we do use this.
Imodium - Also in case of diarrhea, again one of our friends gave this to us in case our homeopathic medicine doesn't work. Since we haven't had problems (knock on wood!) we still carry both just in case.
Bonine - one of our friends gifted this to us because we'd be taking a lot of ferries and one of us is prone to sea sickness. So far we haven't used it and we are totally ok with that.
White Flower Oil - this stuff is AMAZING for bug bites. Apparently this stuff is Chinese, but we bought it in the Philippines and it reduces swelling and itching with in minutes of applying.
Homemade vapor rub - Not really sure what's in this, but our sister-in-law has used this with her kids for the longest time and swears by it. We can honestly say that it totally works for the few times we've had minor colds.
Magnesium Citrate 500mg - from NutriCology, we used to have more sleeping problems before leaving and this Magnesium supplement really helped. We don't need it as much on the road but every so often we'll need to take it. If you think you might have a magnesium deficiency, this one has been great for us.
Advil liquid-gels 200mg - we rarely take more than 1 capsule because we don't normally take pain killers so 1 is enough.
Benadryl - Siori is allergic to shellfish, not a terrible allergy, but we carry this just in case of an accident. So far we haven't used it and are pretty happy about it.
Allegra - We actually don't use this and don't remember why we added this. Since we had already taken the picture we decided to still list it, but we wouldn't recommend it unless you take it every day.
Aloe vera laxative pills - these awesome pills soften the stool with no pain and no emergency rushes to the restroom. Two thumbs up!
Tea tree oil - this oil is naturally antibacterial and can be used for so many uses! We've used this from making our own cleaner in Chile to pimple treatments. For such a small bottle, this one packs a punch.
Gammadyn Cu-Au-Ag - to be honest, I'm not exactly certain how this works, but we are supposed to take it to boost our immune system when we are pretty sick. We used this once, for a pretty bad cold and it totally worked. We didn't have NyQuil at that time so this and Advil was all we used.
Pau D'Arco - also works to boost your immune system but should be taken before you think you might get sick. Our homeopath recommended taking one a day in areas with problems like flu outbreaks and such. We've used it a couple of times and can't say if it works or not... but then again, if it does work, we wouldn't get sick.
NyQuil - we added this recently mostly because Fermin had a bad cold and really missed this. Haven’t used it yet but he likes it so we keep it.
DIY Headache roll on - essential oils for headaches. We apply this to our temples and behind our ears when we have a headache and it works, don't know how, but it's awesome. There are lots of recipes online but ours has peppermint, lavender, frankincense, & eucaliptus oils in almond oil.
Good Samaritan - also known as thieves oil is also used to prevent getting sick (uh, do we see a theme here... now I feel like we are really a little paranoid hhahahah). We just apply a dab in each wrist and mostly use this when we don't use the Pau D' Arco.
Beetelite - this supplement is to help replenish electrolytes in case we become very dehydrated by diarrhea or other causes. We haven't used this yet but we'll update this post when we do.
As you can see, in 10 months (to date of this post) we haven't used much of this kit, and we are very grateful we haven't needed to. Again, if you choose to pick up any of the stuff we have, please consult your homeopath.
