Traveling Confessions - What we don't do

After a year of travel, this is our confessions of the things we don’t do anymore. There is nothing wrong with them, they are just not our faves.

  • Overnight journeys - When we first started we’d save a penny anywhere we could and overnight buses/planes are a good way to save, but we quickly found out that we don’t sleep well while sitting and the overnight travel always left us feeling super wiped and with little energy to explore. So, even though we saved money, we ended up spending more on coffee than we would’ve otherwise. Sometimes it makes sense, when the savings is huge, but for us in places like SE Asia, where you can get a hotel for $30/night, it didn’t make sense to be so tired (especially too when good coffee can cost a pretty penny).

  • Dorms or shared bathrooms - nothing wrong with sharing a bathroom, and in places like Norway, where it’s suuuper expensive, then yes, we’d probably share. But in more affordable places it didn’t make sense to save $5 and not be able to walk around in your undies (to the bathroom, that is) - we love our undie freedom and it’s worth the $5.

  • Wet-bathrooms - some people call them wet-rooms, but basically it’s when the shower is not separated from the rest of the bathroom and everything gets wet. We’ve learned how to take showers where less surfaces get wet but we’d still rather have dry floors when we need to use the toilet in the middle of the night. So, although we still stay in places with wet-bathrooms, we do so very infrequently.

  • Instant coffee - Fermin doesn’t mind instant coffee but I (Siori) do, so we more often than not have real, bean ground coffee even though it costs more. It’s worth having a good cup of coffee and the savings aren’t so huge, generally.

  • Big backpacks - We switched to rollers in December 2018 and are still loving them, find out why.

That’s it! That’s our little confessions of what we now splurge on. What about you? do you have any travel confessions of things you wouldn’t do anymore? Leave them in the comments below!
